So I started nursing again last night around 7 pm. Things went well, Avery latched on perfectly, it was as if she had never had a bottle! When she was done, she didn't spit up really at all!! I was so relieved, the fears I had were gone! Until her next feeding...
At her next feeding, I was dozing off and on (which is easy to do when you're so tired and relaxed), and didn't realize how long she had been nursing. I guess she over ate, because about 20 minutes or so after she was done, she threw up again. Not much, and not projectile like before. It was more like she got gagged and it came up. I started crying..badly!! How can that be I thought to myself. I haven't touched anything dairy in over 72 hours, why on earth is she still throwing up!!! I was discouraged and ready to throw the towel in!
Then I thought to myself...Christy you never give in that easily...why would you give in on this now? I was determined to try it again...they did warn me in the hospital that she could take a few feedings to readjust her belly to my milk again. But I seemed to forget that when she threw up.
So the next feeding...I was super nervous to try again. I mean it was just 3 hours before when she threw up! So I went ahead and fed her my milk...this time perfection! No spit up, no throw up, and went right to sleep and we were able to get 4 hours of sleep at that point!!
So far today all is good! Again on spitting up and no throwing up!!
Now, how am I feeling...well I am still super tired. Not getting my sleep I need is playing a toll on my body. Can't tell yet if I have any less inflammation, so I will have to continue to monitor that closely.
Well, this one is short and to the point, but all is napping and think I need to nap myself. More later...

Ranch Dressing recipe...gotta try this!
So...I did a little research. This is the easiest recipe I have found so far. Now I just need to find the coconut milk, and make this recipe to see how it tastes...sounds good!
What I liked about this post is that the author shows examples of what types of milk are good substitutes based on consistency of "regular" milk used.

Once I make I'll let you know how it turned out!

Days 1 & 2
NOT EASY!
Ok - so this is NOT as easy as I thought. When I was told that all I had to do was cut out dairy, I thought..ok that's easy, cheese, milk, yogurt, sour cream, cream cheese...you know the things you normally eat that have cow's milk. Well...as I spoke with the nutritionist in the hospital I learned I was really wrong on that idea.
So day 1 - in hospital!
My last "dairy" meal was on Monday night around 6:30pm - it was AMAZING! My sister had made several meals for us to freeze and cook as needed! It was awesome all the good meals she made for us...lots of Mexican dishes....which consequently means CHEESE, CHEESE and more CHEESE! Well, Monday we had a beef mex and noodle casserole. The topping was (ready)...CHEESE and SOUR CREAM (16 oz of sour cream)...this was followed by several days of cheesy dishes.
So, I wake up Tuesday morning and am told I can order breakfast, but it is a lactose free breakfast. Now this is hospital food we are talking about, so it's already limited to what they have. So I have 2 pieces of bacon, 2 pieces of white toast with jelly only (NO BUTTER!), and a banana - with a glass of OJ. I will admit, this was not as bad as I thought, I survived my first meal with ease!
Lunch - well that was a little more tricky - went with a grilled chicken sandwich, with pickle and french fries. Again - not so bad!
Dinner - at home - now this is where it gets hard on momma....
I fixed macaroni noodles with tomato sauce (I normally add butter, but didn't this time). Not too bad tasting - but could tell it was missing the butter!! So as I ate, I kept saying over and over...mmm this has butter on it...lol. While the food was cooking, I was pretty hungry, so I thought I would eat a few crackers, just plain saltine crackers. Well that was not happening! The ingredients read "may contain traces of MILK" - really a saltine...that's when I realized that I was in for a long year!
Avery day 1 on Nutramagin:
She did ok with the bottle, against what I thought at first. She was only spitting up a little when finished bottle feeding. To where the day before she would throw up as soon as she was done nursing. This made me happy to know she was keeping down some food!
She's such a strong little princess!
Day 2 - at home
OMG...breakfast didn't happen - woke up late and had to get our older, Cydney, out the door, and then myself and Avery to her 2 week check-up (which went REALLY WELL!). So on the way home, I decide to stop by Target (my 2nd home lol). I was looking for something to eat for lunch...I passed by our normal suspects - chicken taquitos, mini tacos, etc (I have a love for Mexican food). Most of these had MILK or TRACES of MILK. Found some Tyson boneless chicken bites, honey bbq! NO MILK..I felt like I scored 1000 points in a basketball game lol.
I couldn't wait to get home and have some boneless wings, potato chips....and ranch dressing to dip my wings in! OH WAIT! I can't have RANCH DRESSING...aw man - I felt defeated, those 1000 points were withdrawn - I felt like a little kid in a candy store being told...no candy! So I need to find a ranch dressing replacement (watch for a recipe as I will find one!!) So I ate my wings, and chips and called it a successful lunch.
Dinner - well it's Wednesday and we do things easy peasy on Wednesdays due to football..Normally cook hamburger helper meal of some sort with a veggie. Well, can't have ANY hamburger helper meal (I am not too upset by this!). So, I ordered everyone else a pizza and had more chicken wings and smiley potatoes. Was still a little hungry, so I poured a bowl of cheerios - just plain and snacked on them. While I was snacking that's when it hit me! I need to writing this all down...what can I have, not have etc...so I started blogging!
Day 2 Avery - OMG! She is doing great...right back to where she was prior to Monday, Oct 6! She is sleeping normal again and back to her happy go lucky little bitty self! Makes me happy to know that by removing my cow's milk filled milk should work!
So, for one more day I am pumping my milk and waiting patiently to start nursing again! I am hoping she will latch correctly and do ok...my biggest fear of not nursing right now.

Why dairy free......
On September 25, 2014 I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Avery Nicole. She was a healthy 7lb12oz and 19" long, absolutely perfect! As with my other two daughters, the decision to nurse was an easy one - no questions to be asked! Of course I would breast feed! From day one she was an awesome nurser - no issues! I mean, no fussy baby, no spitting up, good burper - overall HAPPY GIRL!
UNTIL....October 6, 2014! When she started throwing up, projectile, and with every feeding! After about 20 hours of her throwing up non-stop, we took her to the ER. She was admitted for observation and given fluids to hydrate. She went through a few tests, ultrasound, xray, blood work.
The ultrasound was done to rule out pyloric stenosis, xray was done to rule out gas on the abdomen, and blood work to check levels. Here is what they found...ultrasound was negative for pyloric stenosis...PRAISES were sang by my sister-in-law and I - as this would have meant surgery! The xray confirmed excessive gas on her abdomen, and her blood work was normal, except for signs of dehydration (which we already expected).
So the gas on the abdomen...what does that mean. Well it was done to say maybe onset of colic...however, being that Avery NEVER cries, even when in complete discomfort (she maybe wined a little, but never cried a lot), they didn't feel that this is a typical colic case. The doctor leaned toward a cow's protein allergy.
At first, I was confused...how can that possibly be! I know that what I eat affects the TASTE of my milk, but really...all the protein from a cow's milk messing with my precious Avery's belly! As I posted the news on FB to update our family and friends, I was amazed to see how many have had the same issue.
So - the result is that she was to start taking formula...which by the way was NOT an easy decision for me at all! I am an avid believer that breast milk is the ONLY milk for a growing baby. Luckily, the doctor said that I can continue to pump and store my milk for 6-8 months...but in the meantime, I needed to become dairy free. It takes about 48-72 hours for my milk to "refresh" itself...so that means I can't nurse her for 3 days! Once I am dairy free for 72 hours, I can nurse again and the formula can stop. Thus, begins my journey to dairy free.
I decided to blog about this because I needed a way to track how I feel, how Avery is doing...and well just make me feel better in general. They say a "journal" helps people cope with things - so why not blog it, so other's who have to go through the same thing can have a point of reference if need be.
I hope to post things like, how am I doing, how is Avery doing, dairy free foods (recipes), listing items that I have found to be dairy free...etc.
I hope you enjoy the posts!
